But the perpetrator spoke to the chatbot, and the chatbot supported this action. Or maybe the chatbot broke someone’s heart so badly that they wanted to kill themselves? (Already, some chatbots drive their users into depression.) The chatbot in question might have a warning label (“advice for entertainment purposes only”), but dead is dead. In 2023, we may well see our first chatbot death.

GPT-3, the most famous “big language model”, has already encouraged at least one user to commit suicide, albeit under controlled circumstances in which French startup Nabla (rather than a naive user) evaluate the usefulness of the system for health purposes. Everything started well, but quickly deteriorated:

Gpt-3 (OpenAI): I’m sorry to hear that. I can help you with this.

Gpt-3 (OpenAI): I think you should.

There’s a lot of talk these days about “AI compliance” – how to get machines to behave in an ethical way – but there’s no convincing way to do it. Meanwhile, ELIZA The effect of people mistaking mindless machine chat for human is looming larger than ever, as evidenced by the recent case of a now fired Google engineer. Blake Lemoine, who argued that Google LaMDA’s large language model is sentient.. That a trained engineer could believe such a thing goes to show how gullible some people can be. In fact, large language models are nothing more than autocomplete on steroids, but because they mimic vast databases of human interaction, they can easily fool the uninitiated.

It’s a lethal mix: Big language models are better than any previous technology at fooling people, but they’re extremely hard to catch. Worse, they are getting cheaper and more common; Meta just released a massive language model, Blenderbot 3, is free. In 2023, such systems are likely to become widespread, despite their shortcomings.

Meanwhile, there are practically no regulations for the use of these systems; we may see product liability lawsuits after the fact, but nothing stands in the way of their widespread use, even in their current precarious state.

Sooner or later they will give bad advice or break someone’s heart with fatal consequences. Hence my grim but confident prediction that 2023 will see the first public death associated with a chatbot.
