Some things difficult to deliver. Flowers are at the top of the list. They are beautiful but the industry has a bad side. Between the amount of water needed for flowers to grow, the dangers of pesticides, the possibility of unregulated and unfair working conditions, and the distance flowers travel. a lot can go wrong. Flowers are also a decorative gift with an expiration date, which makes the pursuit of sustainability even more important. If you’re buying flowers online, we’ve got some tips on how to stay eco-friendly without emptying your wallet.
When possible, look for seasonal arrangements sourced directly from farms, especially those certified by environmental organizations such as rainforest alliance. The florist should be able to tell you where their flowers come from, and the closer to home the better. If you don’t shop at a local flower shop (either in your city or the recipient’s city), find a larger service that works with them. Minimalistic, recyclable and compostable packaging can also help your delivery be more sustainable.

Two excellent flower delivery services
I have personally been using this service for many years and have never had a negative experience. The quality and durability of Bouqs supplies is impressive. tons of bouquets available which are more visually distinctive than those you’ll find elsewhere. Beeches works with farms which are checked by third party services such as rainforest alliance. Its packaging is minimal (yet protecting the contents) and recyclable. Prices start at $49 for orders without a subscription.
Teleflora works directly with local florists, which means the flower arrangements are handmade and delivered, rather than collected elsewhere and shipped. As a result, the flowers are always fresh, like daisies. (Sorry.) Teleflora arrangements always include a vase, which is nice as they can get expensive if added separately. Arrangements for Valentine’s Day start with $50.
Try dried flowers
The flowers are great, but if not preserved, they will eventually wither and wither. Terrain is one of the few online flower shops that offers dried compositions. Wreaths and bouquets are already perfectly preserved, and prices are comparable to fresh deliveries. This more sustainable option than repeat deliveries. Prices start at $28.
Bloom and Wild (UK and other countries)
This service prioritizes sustainability through compostable and recyclable packaging and emphasizes zero-carbon delivery. Fresh flowers available as well as a ton dry flower arrangements. Bloom and Wild work and deliver to the UK, Germany, Ireland and some other countries, but not to the US.
If you can, shop at a local store
The most sustainable flower deliveries are made using seasonal local flowers and delivered over the shortest distance. This means local florist will be your best choice. Often, national delivery services work directly with local florists anyway, so chances are that the whimsical arrangements you’ve been looking for online will be available for the same price, if not cheaper. Shipping is often cheaper if you work directly with a local florist.
Do it yourself
In addition to local florists, you can visit the nursery and choose the flowers yourself. It’s fairly easy to make an eye-catching bouquet out of materials from a craft store (there are many useful instructions on youtube). A vase or basket, fillers like beads, and a pretty ribbon will get you far. Added bonus: everyone loves handmade gifts!
How to save on flower delivery
Prices for flower arrangements do not reflect the cost of accessories such as vases. You can send a bouquet without a vase or choose a smaller vase to save money. Most flower delivery services offer a small discount in exchange for signing up for their email. Don’t be afraid to shop in the clearance section – any reputable flower delivery service will ensure that every delivery is as beautiful as the last, no matter the size or price.
